Madeleine Peyroux received worldwide accolades with her best-selling 1996 CD,
"Dreamland" (Atlantic), which Time Magazine called "a bewitching blend of
jazz, folk and blues--as well as the most exciting, involving vocal performance
by a new singer this year." At only 22 years old, she stunned listeners by
evoking the musical essence of Billie Holiday, Edith Piaf and Bessie Smith, all
within her unique and deeply personal style.
Since that remarkable debut, fans and critics have been yearning for "the
next Madeleine Peyroux album". The wait is over. And what's more, all agree
that over the past eight years Madeleine's voice has matured and mellowed like
a fine red wine.
Madeleine's voice is arresting in its raw expression of reckless joy and
world-weary pathos. On the magic carpet of her rich tone we're transported to
a Paris cabaret in the 1920's, a Harlem jazz club of the 40's or a Greenwich
Village Coffee house in the 60's. But this unique voice is never
"retro" or derivative; it is truly timeless.
Madeleine's extraordinary talent was not cultivated in the jazz program of an
ivory tower conservatory. From the tender age of 15, she paid her dues on the
streets of Paris and New Orleans, traveling and performing with an itinerant
street band across Europe and the US. After the great success and demanding
tours following "Dreamland", Madeleine retreated from the spotlight for
nearly eight years, but her talent only ripened in the dark. Teaming up with William
Galison in 2002, Madeleine hit the club circuit again, packing venues around
the US and Europe. In 2003, the pair recorded "Got You on My Mind" to
immortalize the extraordinary musical chemistry between them. Though Madeleine
has been sorely missed these past years, she has now emerged in glorious form and
the release of" Got You on My Mind" proves it's has been worth the wait.
